Russian Impressionism
Russian
Impressionism is showing in many fine art galleries in the US
and you might ask "WHY?". During the Stalin years, competition to
be selected as a government subsidized artist was intense. Years of
rigorous study following the academic model stressing drawing,
knowledge of anatomy, gray scale, composition, perspective and
mastery of color value were precursors to consideration for
admission to the prestigious art guilds. Once selected the artists
would provide propaganda for the Soviet government, but on their own
time they painted the genre art that is so collectible today, scenes
of daily life. These amazing paintings both figurative and
landscape, created by artists so vigorously trained were painted
from the heart to reflect their lives and not to satisfy the
government, a gallery or a patron. When the Communist Block
crumbled, the art world discovered these "hidden treasures". Today
they are viewed as the very best works of the years 1920 to 1990.
Ray Johnson, one of the visionary art dealers to bring Russian
Impressionism to the world, opened The Museum of Russian Art (TMORA.org)
in Minneapolis and helped curate major shows at the Smithsonian and
Guggenheim. He views these works as "the Monets and Van Goghs of
our time".
