Curt MattsonCurt Mattson

Curt’s life with horses is the grounding and inspiration for his art.  To be a sculptor is the greatest of gifts in his eyes, and he feels blessed to share it with others.  “I thank the Lord everyday for allowing me to create art.”

Born in California, his family was heavily involved in training and showing horses growing up.  He learned to ride and train everything from cutting and reining horses to pleasure horses while working on ranches through out the West

Early on Curt met Cowboy Artist of America member Mehl Lawson, who generously took Curt under his wing and taught him from the ground up.   While living in Prescott, AZ Curt’s intensive training continued with Cowboy Artist of America member Pat Haptonstall

“It is important to me that my sculpture be first and foremost great art.  My work must be historically accurate and artistically important.  Hard decisions have to be made for the statement to be both accurate and compelling. My sculptures must have all of these components. In the end my sculptures must speak to others.  Art should be about others and bringing them into the world they love and admire. To do otherwise is meaningless.”

Curt’s vibrant pieces have won many significant awards.  Among the are them, the Gold Medal at the American Artists Professional League Show 2007, the Purchase Award, Best of Show and Gold Medal at the National Western Art Show 2007, Cowboy Artists of America Founders’ Award 2006, The Phippen Family Award, Best of Show and Gold Medal at the Phippen Museum Show 2005, Gold Medal at the American Artists Professional League Show 2004, Silver Medal  at the Allied Artists of America Show 2003, Elliot Gantz Award at the National Sculpture Society 2002.

As well, his work has been featured in magazines that include Western Art Collector, Art Talk, Art of the West, Western Horseman, Cowboys & Indians and Southwest Art.
